Expecto Paaatrooonum!!

Today is diaversary number seven for my sweet Ms. Ave. I was trying to think of an appropriate title for this post. 3rd times a charm? Numero 7 pour ma fille? Diaversary’s ‘R’ Us? Ah, it’s ‘Expecto PATRONUM’ (to this bloody disease) for my ultimate Harry Potter fan.

It feels like there’s been a rash of diaversary celebrations in this house lately. I guess three celebrations when you’ve never celebrated them, brings the whole ‘diabetes is in your life’ to the forefront. But as I’ve learned and said in other posts, we’re celebrating the successes.

Ave has a lot of successes. She is persistent with her diabetes management and hyper-sensitive to out of range blood sugars. In this house if somebody is going to try a new diabetes technique, you can be sure it’s Ave; she’s always looking for better and easier management styles for herself. She loves athletics of all kinds and refuses to let diabetes interfere with her goals. Some days she makes it just look simple and easy. From the beginning she adjusted to needles and testing as if it was just an everyday thing. In fact, she seemed almost relieved to be in her big brothers type 1 club.

I know in truth that’s not how it always feels to my sweet girl. And absolutely there are days where she shows her diabetes fatigue. There have been tears, lots of her tears. There have been screams and angry moments. Maybe hardest of all are her quiet times when she wishes diabetes away.

So cheers to my sweetie! For her hard work, thoughtfulness & grace in managing a demanding disease.
